Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first in the second and final Test match of the series against New Zealand.

Despite losing Pathum Nissanka in the very first over, Sri Lanka recovered strongly posting 306 runs for the loss of three wickets at the end of Day 1. Dinesh Chandimal was the star hitting a century to put Sri Lanka on the front-foot on the opening day. At stumps, Kamindu Mendis, continuing his terrific form, was batting past his half-century alongside veteran Angelo Matthews who too had gotten past 70.
